After a few years of martial arts and working on strength, I noticed imbalances and mobility issues getting in the way of improvements. In few sessions Phill went through some movement-quality focused exercises that I’ll be working on, and benefitting from for a very long time. Not only that, he was able to work with my minimal equipment and a badly timed wrist sprain. One thing I really appreciated is how Phill worked with my current goals. I already knew Phill can encourage you through a 100 burpee workout or coach strength-focused weights sets. This time I needed something a bit less exciting, he gave excellent advice, and I’m already feeling the benefits in my sports and my own workouts.

After I retired and had more spare time, I planned to tackle my waning fitness, strength and flexibility. Somehow I just never got around to it. I had tried joining a gym in the past, but found I rarely went so it was just a waste of money.
Training with Rebel Monk under Phill’s careful guidance has changed all that. He devised a bespoke training programme, crafted to suit my goals and taking my limitations into account, particularly a dodgy knee and creaky back. Phill has helped me find the motivation that I need and I now train regularly, following my routines online. We have regular reviews and check-in, both online and in person.
I’m already feeling stronger, and am progressing to lift heavier weights. I’m more supple and am even beginning to tackle squats despite my knee problems. Phill is an excellent teacher and motivator, with a very positive, encouraging and supportive approach. He’s also very knowledgeable and I feel entirely safe in his hands. I have always had issues with shin splints when running even a few kilometres, and was never sure what I was doing to cause them. Knowing how much running experience Phill has, I got in touch with him to try and figure it out. The difference was incredible. He very quickly pointed out some changes to my technique that solved the problem, and he helped me from slipping back in to those bad habits on longer runs. Now I’m able to run from Cambridge to Ely — more than a half marathon worth of distance — with no issues. For this and for his coaching style I really recommend Phill as a coach.

Even after training as a kickboxer for 4 years, I could only manage press-ups on my knees. With no kickboxing through summer 2020, most aspects of my fitness had gone out the window, so I reached out to Phill and asked him to help. Placing the organisational responsibility on someone else and for them to hold me accountable made it a lot easier for me to get back into shape, even better than I was before! I can finally do that full press-up. We’re working on pull-ups now, something that I hadn’t even considered before starting with him. Phill teaches you how to train the right way without wasting your time and I would recommend anyone with specific fitness goals to look him up.

Before I started training, I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to keep up. But with the programme especially tailored for me, I am able to go at my own pace while making good progress. I am getting stronger and fitter, with more muscle definition. After only six weeks people have told me I’ve visibly lost weight and look stronger. Phill has always been a good and attentive coach who knows his stuff on how to properly get fit and build muscle.
